Year 5/6 - Mr S. Harris and Mrs S. Smith

In Kestrels class this year Mrs Smith and Mr Harris are the class teachers. We will be helped by Mrs Younger.

We will start the year by studying a book called 'The Tulip touch' which is about the importance of healthy relationships.

Our first topic this year is ‘Rotten Romans’. We will begin the topic with an exciting hook day to introduce children to what life was like in Roman times. We will be learning about the Roman Empire and the lasting impact it had on Britain, as part of the topic we will visit the Roman baths at Caerleon.

In Literacy we will write Non-Chronological reports about the Romans as well as our own story set in Roman times.

In Numeracy we will focus on developing our Place Value, Number and Measurement skills. We will also investigate Roman Numerals. To help Kestrels class become maths champions we will have a big push on times tables.

We will develop our creative skills in Music, Art and DT by creating Roman Mosaics and Catapults and learning about historical musicians. We will also recreate Roman Marches and Army Formations in PE lessons as well as developing our skills in games such as football and netball..

In Computing we will use our computing skills to research the Romans, we will learn how to search safely and the importance of good online relationships.

Our P.E days will be Tuesday and Thursday. It is a good idea if children keep their P.E kits in school at all times as P.E lessons may change due to weather and school commitments.
