Hedgehogs

Class information overview – Otters

Welcome to Hedgehogs class. Your teacher’s names are Mrs Haworth and Mrs Hugo. Mrs Haworth will teach the class on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Mrs Hugo will teach the class on a Thursday and Friday. The other adults who will be working in our classroom during the week are Miss Prawl, Mrs Bluett, Mrs Mattacola and Miss Davies.

Our topic for the Summer Term is ‘Forest, Mines and Tourists’ and throughout the term we will be developing skills in History, Science and D&T.

In History, we will be focusing on coal mining to learn about significant events and people in our locality. The topic will begin with an exciting hook with the children visiting Hopewell Colliery to experience what it is like inside a mine and spend time exploring the on-site museum. We will then continue our work on mining back in classroom with the children finding out what Cinderford was like during this time and why coal mining was important to the local area. We will be studying what life was like in the mines and discover how mining was made safer. We will link many curriculum areas to the topic including Science, D&T and Art. In Science, we will be learning about light and dark and electricity later in the term. We will also be continuing to explore and compare seasonal changes throughout the year. In D&T, the children will investigate pulleys and levers to design, make and evaluate a cart that would help miners move coal. In Art, we will look at local artists and use block printing to create artwork linked to the forest.

Hedgehogs PE days are Wednesday and Friday so please ensure that your child wears their PE kit to school on these days.  P.E kit should consist of; a plain coloured (preferably white or blue) t-shirt/polo shirt, a plain blue or navy jumper, black or navy blue shorts/joggers and trainers or daps.

Homework will be set at the start of the term on Seesaw. Children can upload their work to Seesaw at the end of the term or as they finish each task. If you would prefer a paper copy of the homework please just let us know and we will send a copy home.  Children will receive rewards for completed homework tasks.

It is also essential that you hear your child read daily and support them with their phonics. An R1 and a raffle ticket will be given each time your child reads at home. At the end of term, a raffle will be drawn and the winner will get a small prize. Please remember to sign their link book to let us know they have read so they can earn their raffle tickets and progress up the Reach for the Stars reading ladder in the classroom.  You can support us by helping your child learn their times tables (2s, 5s and 10s) and practice reading and spelling the red words from their colour bookmark. Children in year 2 can become ‘Maths Champions’ and receive a special pencil when they know their 2, 5 and 10 times tables and division facts.

Please remember the Phonics Screening Check is on the week beginning the 12th June 2023 for all children in Year 1 and some children in Year 2. Please engage with the phonics pack sent home during last term and complete the phonics activities that are set on Seesaw.  Some useful websites for further phonic games are linked below:
