Welcome to Merlins Class.
Our Topic for the Spring Term is ‘Survival Of The Fittest’ and throughout this term we will focus on developing our scientific knowledge and understanding. We will be learning about Living Things and their Habitats and Animals, including humans. We will begin our topic by trying our best to complete an exciting assault course.
In English, we will be using our science knowledge and writing skills to write an explanation text. We will also write and film a Nature Documentary. We will use the book ‘The Lost Words’ to write our own poems and create some detailed artwork, alongside digital photography with the natural world as our focus. We will end the topic by writing a range of genres based on the book ‘Brightstorm’
In Maths, we will focus on building and strengthening our knowledge of number. We will learn about: algebra, ratio and proportion, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals and percentages, and measurement
We will develop our creative skills in Design and Technology by taking part in a KNEX challenge and creating a Sky-Ship from the book Brightstorm. We will also be using our Computing skills to design, debug and write programs for specific goals.
In Music we will listen to compositions by Anna Meredith and learn how to create body percussion with the group, ‘Stomp,’ as our inspiration. Musical notation will be covered in the 2nd half of this term.
During the term we will also be going on a school trip to Skillzone and taking part in outdoor learning with a ‘Teaching Trees’ Education officer. We will also try our best to complete a challenging assault course.
You will not need to bring your PE kits to school but you can wear your PE kits on our PE days. All PE will be outside so please make sure you’ll be warm enough.
Homework will be set at the start of the term on Seesaw. Children can upload their work to Seesaw at the end of the term or as they finish each task. If you would prefer a paper copy of the homework please contact the school to arrange this. Children will receive rewards for completed homework tasks.
You can support us by listening to your child read regularly, helping them learn their times tables and practice their spelling. Children will receive a reward and raffle ticket each time they read at home (you can sign their link book or they could upload a photo/video to Seesaw). Children can become ‘Maths Champions’ and receive a special pencil when they know all the times tables and division facts up to 12x12 and are able to use them to solve a variety of problems. Children will also receive rewards for doing well in their spellings.
We look forward to learning lots of new and interesting things this term!
