Merlins

Welcome to Merlins Class.

Our Topic for the Summer Term is ‘Temples, Tombs and Treasures’ and throughout this term we will be developing our Historical knowledge and understanding. We will be learning about the Ancient Egyptians, investigating artefacts and how we use them to learn about the past, studying the religious beliefs of Ancient Egyptians and discovering how and why the pyramids were built. We will then use this knowledge to write a non-chronological report.

In English, we will develop our narrative writing by writing a text based on ‘The Hunter and The Hunted’ Read, Write, Perform unit. We will also be writing some of our own poetry. We will focus on the book ‘Twitch’ by M.G Leonard and will complete various writing tasks based on this text.

In Maths, we will focus on building and strengthening our knowledge of: place value; addition and subtraction; multiplication and division; fractions, decimals and percentages; measures: geometry; statistics and time.

In Science, we will be learning about forces and will apply some of our knowledge of forces to build cams mechanism models in our Design and Technology lessons. We will develop our creative skills throughout our Art lessons where will we learn about David Hockney and how he uses technology in his artwork. In Music, we will be improvising, composing and performing using instruments and our voices. We are looking forward to learning and performing new songs for our Y6 leavers assembly.

During PSHE we will be learning about Living in the Wider World and the British Values. In our Online Safety lessons we will learn about our Online Relationships and Reputation as well as our Self-Image and Identity. We will also be learning to read and write simple phases in French in our Modern Foreign Language lessons.

You will not need to bring your PE kits to school but you can wear your PE kits on our PE days (Monday and Tuesday). From 17th May we will be swimming on a Wednesday.

Homework will be set at the start of the term on Seesaw. Children can upload their work to Seesaw at the end of the term or as they finish each task. If you would prefer a paper copy of the homework please contact the school to arrange this.  Children will receive rewards for completed homework tasks.

You can support us by listening to your child read regularly, helping them learn their times tables and practicing their spellings. Children will receive a reward and a raffle ticket each time they read at home (you can sign their link book or they could upload a photo/video to Seesaw). Children can become ‘Maths Champions’ and receive a special pencil when they know all the times tables and division facts up to 12x12 and are able to use them to solve a variety of problems. Children will also receive rewards for doing well in their spellings.

We look forward to learning lots of new and interesting things this term!
