Welcome to Merlins class.

We will begin the Autumn Term by focusing on the book The Soup Movement by Ben Davis. We will focus on PSHE: relationships, overcoming challenges and accepting differences.

Our topic for the remainder of Autumn Term is ‘Rotten Romans’. We will begin the topic with an exciting hook day, where children will complete a variety of Roman challenges to discover what Roman life was like. During the topic, we will continue to learn about the Roman Empire and its Impact on Britain and the legacy of Roman culture. We will use our Geography skills to locate the Roman Empire, roads and place names. We will also go on an exciting trip to Caerleon and visit the Roman Baths and Amphitheatre.

In English, we will write Non-Chronological reports about the Romans, write our own Battle Cry and we will plan and write our own Roman story.

In Maths, we will focus on building and strengthening our knowledge of place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions and geometry.  We will also investigate Roman Numerals.

In Science, we will carry out different types of enquires to learn more about how changes we make to the materials can be reversed and which changes are irreversible and to develop our skills to be able to work scientifically.

We will develop our creative skills in Music, Art and DT by creating Roman Mosaics and Catapults. We will also recreate Roman Marches and Army Formations in PE lessons.  In Music children will learn to recognise notes on a stave and the value of the notes. We will learn to read music to play notes on a chime bar. We will then revise musical material to compose our own words to familiar tunes that we can perform.

In Computing, we will learn how networks work and how data travels across the internet. We will learn how to search safely and manage our online information, including our privacy and security. We will also learn about the importance of Copyright and Ownership.

You will not need to bring your PE kits to school but you can wear your PE kits on our PE days.

Homework will be set at the start of the term on Seesaw. Children can upload their work to Seesaw at the end of the term or as they finish each task. If you would prefer a paper copy of the homework please contact the school to arrange this.  Children will receive rewards for completed homework tasks.

You can support us by listening to your child read regularly, helping them learn their times tables and practicing their spellings. Children will receive a reward and a raffle ticket each time they read at home (you can sign their link book or they could upload a photo/video to Seesaw). Children can become ‘Maths Champions’ and receive a special pencil when they know all the times tables and division facts up to 12x12 and are able to use them to solve a variety of problems. Children will also receive rewards for doing well in their spellings.

We look forward to learning lots of new and interesting things this term!
