Otters

Year 1/2 - Mrs T. James and Mrs K. Cousins

Our names are Mrs James and Mrs Cousins and we are the class teachers of Otters class.  Mrs James teaches the class at the start of the week and Mrs Cousins teaches every Thursday and Friday. The other adults who will be working in our classroom during the week are Mrs Mansell, Mrs Bluett, Mrs Farrugia and Mrs Mattacola.

We will begin this year by focusing on the story ‘Making Friends’. We will spend time getting to know the story using role play and story-telling.  While studying this book, we will also focus on CPHSE in particular developing new relationships and friendships and recapping the school and classroom rules.

The topic title for the rest of the term will be ‘London’s Burning’. During this time we will focus on The Great Fire of London while developing the children’s historical knowledge and understanding of this significant event from the past. The topic hook for this work will be a visit from a theatre company where the children will travel back to the 17th Century to find out what happened during September 1666. We will be exploring what life would have been like during this time, when and where the fire started and why the fire spread so quickly. We will also look at Samuel Pepys’ diary and use this as a basis for our own diary writing.

We will continue the theme of The Great Fire of London through other areas of the curriculum. In Music, we will be using our voices creatively when singing and focus on the nursery rhyme London’s burning. During Art, we will look at the work of Joseph William Turner and use his work as inspiration of our own fiery paintings. In Design and Technology we will design and make our own houses and investigate how to make our structures stronger and more stable. We will investigate materials and their properties in Science and carry out investigations to find which materials are the most waterproof.

Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday so please ensure that your child has a PE kit in school each week including shorts, t-shirt and daps so that they are able to fully participate.

We will also set a homework pack with weekly activities to complete. The activity pack will be handed out in the first couple of weeks and can be returned at the end of term, or weekly if preferred. The children receive R1’s for each completed piece of homework handed in. It is also essential that you hear your child read daily and support them with their phonic packs. An R1 will be given each time your child reads at home but please remember to sign their link book to let us know they have read and so they can progress up the Reach for the Stars reading ladder in the classroom.

We look forward to an exciting and busy term filled with engaging learning opportunities.
